Today's Japanese is "w,草（くさ/kusa）".

lol, funny, hilarious
e.g.) いや、まじでそれは草。

Origin of w,草(くさ/kusa)
Back to 2000's, Japanese people used to use "(笑)" as "lol" in English.
"(笑)" has some other forms such as "笑", "藁", "わら(ゎら)" and "ワラ(ヮラ)".
These have the same sound but "w" is a little bit different.
"w" has been used especially on "2ch(A famous internet imageboard website in Japan)" which is the origin of "4chan".
Actually the owner of both websites is the same guy, Hiroyuki Nishimura.

"w" is just an alphabet though, its sound has the same first sound with "(笑)" when it comes to Roma-ji.

This is why they, the internet heros, started to use "w" instead.
And one day someone realized "w" seems like grass.

Grass is "草(くさ)" in Japanese.
This is how "草" got birth.
How to use w,草(くさ/kusa)?
You can use "w" and "草" whenever you feel it's funny just as you use "lol" things.
On texting or conversation, it doesn't matter.
But as a Japanese, I'll give you more precise tips for "草".
"草" is the same meaning as "w" and "(笑)" but NOT THE SAME COMPLETELY.
Japanese people literally SAY "草" when they find it funny, but they DON'T SAY an alphabet "w" either "(笑)".
E.G.
Boy: 見てみて！ あれバカおもろくない？
Girl: 草。
Boy:Hey look! It's so funny isn't it?
Girl:Hilarious.
In the other hand, they DON'T USE "草" with other sentence like an emoji or "lol".
E.G.

Boy: [おもしろ動画を送る]
Girl: どうなってんwww
Boy: [Sent a funny video]
Girl: What happened lol
In this case they use "w" or "(笑)", not "草".
So Japanese people use "草" as "complement" but "w" and "(笑)" can't be complement.
This is the difference.
